Servant Leadership & Talent Based Spiritual Gifts

Updated: Jan 11

Last week we learned more about knowledge and learning based spiritual gifts. This week we will be discussing the leadership and talent based spiritual gifts or charisms.

These charisms are:

  • Administration

  • Apostleship

  • Craftsmanship

  • Musicianship

  • Servant Leadership

  • Communication

For those of you scored high in these, here's what it means for you:

Administration

Are you exceptional in organizing people and activities? The charism of administration works to inspire people to work together to do God's work in the Church in an effective and cooperative manner. You are the one who keeps people on task and working together during church meetings. You are the one who enjoys creating and executing plans, does the follow-up, and other business like duties.

You can find many ministries that involve Administration. Some examples could be: Knights of Columbus. Church Office. Parish Council/Finance Council. Ushers.

But the earlier governors—those preceding me—placed a heavy burden on the people and took forty shekels of silver from them in addition to food and wine. Their assistants also lorded it over the people. But out of reverence for God I did not act like that. - Nehemiah 5:15 NIV

Apostleship

This is basically what the Bible means it to be. The gift of apostleship, means to have the gift to lead others in their spiritual lives and faith. You have the ability to understand and surrender to God's will in both your life and that of others. You see and fear God's leadership in the Church and therefore are able to train others in His compassion and love. Sometimes it means calling out others (in a kind way) to bring them back in order with God's decrees. Other times it means reminding or showing others that God is alive and real in their lives.

You can find many ministries that involve Apostleship. Some examples could be: Vocation to Holy Life, Parish Council, RCIA Sponsor, Small Faith Groups, Youth Group Ministry.

As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” At once they left their nets and followed him. - Matthew 4:18-20 NIV

Craftsmanship

Do you love working with your hands and creating something beautiful? Jesus did. He worked with wood as a carpenter. Having this passion as a charism, means that you have a skill that other's often don't. What separates this from a hobby, is your level of talent as well as your joy working with your craft. It also means that you are willing to share your gift and creations with others in order to bring them comfort, beauty, and joy. It means you use your gift for God's will and mercy. This could be any kind of skill such as carpentry, arts and crafts, painting, stained glass making, poetry, photography, web design. The options are endless.

You can find many ministries that involve Craftsmanship. Some examples could be: Church Gardens, Quilting Ministry, Prayer Blanket Ministry, Habitat for Humanity, Rosary Making for Prisoners and Sailors.

He has filled them with skill to do all kinds of work as engravers, designers, embroiderers in blue, purple and scarlet yarn and fine linen, and weavers-all of them skilled workers and designers. - Exodus 35:35 NIV

Musicianship

Many times the bible mentions praising God through song and dance. Those of you with this spiritual gift are talented and have a passion for doing just that. This is also more than just a hobby, for the same reasons mentioned above in Craftsmanship. You have a level of skill most don't, and you couldn't imagine your life without music in it. Maybe you can sing at a higher level than others. You can read music and play an instrument. You can compose moving scores of notes. You are also willing to use your gift and talents to aid in worship and bring music to the church community.

There are many ministries that involve Musicianship. Some examples could be: Church Choir. Music Ensemble. Easter or Christmas Programs. Music Therapy.

The trumpeters and musicians joined in unison to give praise and thanks to the Lord. Accompanied by trumpets, cymbals and other instruments, the singers raised their voices in praise to the Lord and sang: “He is good; his love endures forever.” - 2 Chronicles 5:13 NIV

Servant Leadership

This gift sounds a bit like Apostleship, but it is different. It is leadership within the Church and within church community groups. Those of you with this charism, have a God given charisma that allows others to confidently follow your lead. You tend to naturally be elected to guide and run whatever ministry you join. Your ideas inspire others. And you have a passion for being responsible to others with your guidance and leadership.

There are many ministries that involve Servant Leadership. Some examples could be: Marriage Prep, Vocation to Holy Life, RCIA, Pastoral Council, Young Adult Faith Formation.

To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder and a witness of Christ’s sufferings who also will share in the glory to be revealed: Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.  - 1 Peter 5:1-3 NIV

Communication

The charism of Communication having the ability to communicate with and understand others in an extraordinary way. You may have a gift with languages, or have a knack for reaching out to others in different cultures or with different backgrounds from your own. It requires an ability to listen and having a compassion towards all humanity. You have a passion and desire to interact with others that they appreciate and in a way that brings them closer to God.

There are many ministries that involve Communication. Some examples could be: Church Radio Stations or Podcasts, St. Vincent de Paul, Lector, International Missions and Travel.

Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language?  - Acts 2:5-8 NIV
